  • [00:30:15] <Aptos> So my question is... What is the voltage that Beaglebon Black spits out for the pins that can give a PWM signal... I am going to use it to drive about 12 transistors and I need to know the voltage to get the right transistors
  • [00:34:50] <agmlego> I believe that all of the digital IO on the bone is 3.3V.
  • [00:36:21] <Aptos> Alright... I'm not like a big expert on how amps are taken into account when using different components but do you think that the amperage would matter when I choose my transistors?
  • [00:37:58] <agmlego> Yes if you use BJTs.
  • [00:38:04] <agmlego> If you use FETs, no.
  • [00:38:32] <Aptos> I'm using fets
  • [00:38:44] <Aptos> N to be exact
  • [00:39:01] <agmlego> THen as long as the Vgs is 3.3V or less, you are fine.

  • [00:41:58] <agmlego> Aptos: Go for it, but keep in mind this is a channel of volunteers. ;-P
  • [00:43:58] <Aptos> I understand :D The BeagleBone that I am using will be down on a underwater robot 50ft away from the surface. I was thinking we could run 5v power down on two normal wires and then yoke them with the wire of a male USB to power the Beagle (not supplying any signal or information). Do you think that there will be a power drop over that distance and will be be harmful?
  • [00:45:53] <agmlego> Yes there will be a power drop, and that is easily calculated.
  • [00:46:25] <agmlego> There are even online calculators for voltage drop.
  • [00:46:37] <agmlego> Personally, I would change two things:
  • [00:46:52] <agmlego> 1. Run higher than 5V to the ROV and regulate locally.

  • [00:59:16] <agmlego> ...too *much* power usage?

  • [00:59:34] <Aptos> Because my friend who will be doing all the software for it is worried that will be a problem
  • [01:00:17] <Aptos> As in too much I mean by using too many pins at one time :D
  • [01:00:38] <agmlego> As long as you have a sufficiently stiff power supply, it should be fine.
  • [01:00:47] <ds2> you mean using the GPIOs for welding?
  • [01:00:55] <agmlego> You should aim to get around 2A at 5V available at the barrel jack.
  • [01:06:45] <Aptos> Ok, would it hurt to put some capacitors in front of the power into the beagle?
  • [01:07:05] * jpfau is now known as jpfau|away

  • [01:09:27] <Aptos> Arduino*
  • [01:09:40] <agmlego> Some.
  • [01:11:41] <Aptos> Last year we used an arduino on our robot. It had power problems and I am wondering whether that was because it was using the only power cable that went down to the robot... one that also powered our motors.
  • [01:12:06] <agmlego> Yes, likely.
  • [01:12:13] <agmlego> Motors are very electrically noisy.
  • [01:12:37] <ds2> motors can send large spikes backwards

  • [15:56:01] <hvn2> rcn-ee: ok ty...yes, i'm using the classic version
  • [15:56:41] <rcn-ee> hvn2, we can use sdxc unoffically on the bbb, as it supports some of the transfer modes..

  • [15:59:57] <rcn-ee> jbdatko, the syntax changed for gpio, at the time i built that dts i don't know the syntax.. need to grab the board and test..
  • [16:00:44] <rcn-ee> hvn2, this one should work: http://elinux.org/BeagleBoardUbuntu#BeagleBoard_.28classic.29 but your u-boot might be too old an ancient just "nand erase.chip" to fix that..

  • [16:04:47] <rcn-ee> ubuntu tells you that automaticly... weither or not they actually support the hardware..
  • [16:05:45] <rcn-ee> they stopped offically support the beagleboard classic years ago, if you want to use ubuntu and want something actually tested and works use: http://elinux.org/BeagleBoardUbuntu#BeagleBoard_.28classic.29
