  • [21:58:28] <jkridner> RogerMonk: ping
  • [21:58:32] <ali_as> What does a real distro mean?
  • [21:58:42] <jkridner> er, a distro at all.
  • [21:58:47] <ali_as> Like a branded version?
  • [21:58:54] <jkridner> anything other than u-boot. :)
  • [21:59:10] * likewise (n=chatzill@82-171-51-231.ip.telfort.nl) Quit ("ChatZilla 0.9.82.1 [Firefox 2.0.0.14/2008040413]")
  • [21:59:28] <jkridner> well, it isn't necessarily that all distros are looking to put out a brand name, but it tends to happen that way.
  • [22:00:21] <ali_as> It would be helpful if the default kernel was supplied on the flash, even if this is an older version.

  • [22:01:23] * Olipro_ (i=Olipro@unaffiliated/olipro) Quit (Connection timed out)
  • [22:01:41] <jkridner> I figure it'd help more if a default kernel was more promoted on the website, that way it could be more up-to-date.
  • [22:01:56] <jkridner> ideally it would be the last tested version of the git.
  • [22:02:01] <ali_as> Having bought a linux board fairly recently that needed a bootp server, a tftp server and a voodoo chant just to get a linux prompt, made for a steep learning curve.
  • [22:02:29] <jkridner> my preference would be to not use any modules and to make it be a big kernel, then let people do their own config to strip it down.
  • [22:02:51] <jkridner> sure, but I think we can solve that with pre-imaged SD cards.
  • [22:02:54] <ali_as> I like that.
  • [22:03:29] <jkridner> then, I can have a MontaVista card, Angstrom card, and even (be prepared) a Microsoft (WinCE, not Linux) card.
  • [22:07:31] <ali_as> WinCE might end up with a ling line of pitchfork and torch weilding villagers, but that sounds like a good way to go generally, uboot in flash configured to boot the sd card.
  • [22:08:47] <jkridner> really, the only reason I'd even put uboot on is to make sure when you plug it in it comes to a user prompt with sounds and something on the screen.
  • [22:09:05] <jkridner> with SD card boot, you don't even need to use the on-flash u-boot.
  • [22:09:06] <ali_as> Can uboot be made OS neutral or will it need to be configured?
  • [22:09:31] <ali_as> Really, the chip can boot from SD like it can from serial port etc?
  • [22:09:36] <jkridner> I'd say the SD cards should go ahead and flash the board so that you can change the SD card after the first boot.
  • [22:09:44] <jkridner> yup.
  • [22:10:12] <jkridner> it is a bit of a hassle to make uboot completely OS neutral, so the booting from SD solves that.
  • [22:10:42] <jkridner> the ROM bootloader looks for a file called MLO on the SD card.
  • [22:10:57] <jkridner> the biggest headache has been that you have to have the SD card formatted just so to make it work.
  • [22:11:18] <jkridner> you can see on the mailing list where even dirk2 is having some problems getting his card formatted right.
  • [22:11:30] <jkridner> however, if we send out preformatted cards, then it is a no-brainer.
  • [22:12:00] <jkridner> you can also boot via USB, but the software for that isn't great yet, and it requires some intelligent use of a computer, which is sometimes a challenge.
  • [22:15:54] <ali_as> Automatic sd card burning sounds a bit dangerous.
  • [22:16:25] <ali_as> Any way to make it an option to burn or boot off the card or it that making things complicated?
  • [22:16:25] <jkridner> you mean you wouldn't like it to automatically reprogram your flash?
  • [22:17:25] <jkridner> I'm not sure. It would be up to the UI provided by the cards. I'd say something could be done with the USER button, such as holding it for a really long time to get it to overwrite the flash.
  • [22:18:33] <jkridner> I've been trying to bat around ideas on a bit of a competition on making SD card images. koen has a bit of a head start on the world, but he's also been really nice about sharing.
