I have tried several different monitors (alienware, samsung) and tvs (sharp aquos, samsung, panasonic) as well as adjusting their display settings. I thought that it may be a OS issue, so I booted debian off of uSD and it was worse on the LXDE desktop. Is this an issue with the BBB or possibly the monitors and tvs?

  • [23:08:42] <OnlineCop> And ‘iwconfig’ just gives: http://pastebin.com/Z3S9GjcA
  • [23:09:11] <OnlineCop> So I’d assume that everything is ready and waiting to be enabled and go… I just don’t know the commands to do that.
  • [23:09:20] <veremit> yeah it can't "see" it because is Down
  • [23:09:43] <OnlineCop> ‘ifup wlan0’ just gives me: Ignoring unknown interface wlan0=wlan0.
  • [23:09:56] <veremit> here ya go .. https://wiki.debian.org/WiFi/HowToUse
  • [23:10:15] <veremit> ifconfig wlan0 up" might be better
  • [23:10:27] <veremit> or I see the rfkill module is loaded .. so that might be a trap
  • [23:10:51] <OnlineCop> After an ‘ifconfig wlan0 up’, the only change is that ‘ifconfig’ doesn’t require ‘-a’ to list wlan0.
  • [23:10:52] <__butch__> @OnlineCop: Did you try configuring /etc/network/interfaces?
  • [23:11:10] * divine (~divine@137.122.64.19) Quit (Quit: Reconnecting)
  • [23:11:19] <OnlineCop> __butch__: I did, but when I started to use wicd, I was informed that /etc/network/interfaces ignores (or doesn’t work properly) with anything defined in that file.
  • [23:11:28] * divine (~divine@137.122.64.19) has joined #beaglebone
  • [23:11:35] <veremit> yea wicd will ignore it
  • [23:11:35] <__butch__> Perhaps that's true — I didn't go back to check. :-)
  • [23:11:41] <OnlineCop> veremit: Would I see ‘rfkill’ in ‘ps aux’ or somewhere else?
  • [23:11:46] <veremit> wicd is ... no comment. lol.
  • [23:11:51] <veremit> its in that lsmod output
  • [23:11:58] <__butch__> What happens if you try using wicd-curses, wicd-client, or wicd-gtk?
  • [23:12:09] * improvnerd (~jbrewer@12.250.97.26) Quit (Quit: improvnerd)
  • [23:12:13] <OnlineCop> veremit: I’d avoid wicd entirely, but I need its wired/wireless interface (.py files) so I don’t have to roll my own if someone wants wifi.
  • [23:12:18] <veremit> OnlineCop .. try "rfkill unblock all"
  • [23:12:29] <__butch__> @veremit: I can use wicd to get networking up, so I'm not going to complain about it too much. :-)
  • [23:12:30] <veremit> then perhaps iwlist wlan0 scanning
  • [23:12:41] <veremit> __butch__ yeah I suppose it Sorta works lol
  • [23:13:11] <OnlineCop> veremit: Okay, ‘rfkill unblock all’ now gives me something with ‘iwlist wlan0 scanning’ where it didn’t before.
  • [23:13:24] <OnlineCop> And yet…
  • [23:13:25] <veremit> thought it might :)
  • [23:13:28] <veremit> disabled by default :/
  • [23:13:43] <OnlineCop> wicd’s ‘wicd-client’ still shows no wireless networks found, even though I’m able to see SSIDs from iwlist.
  • [23:13:58] <veremit> is wicd loaded correctly/

  • [23:14:31] <veremit> does it know about the wlan0 card? I've had to select it in KDE before
  • [23:14:37] <OnlineCop> [ ok ] wicd is running
  • [23:14:58] <veremit> no idea how it works command-line :/
  • [23:15:02] <OnlineCop> veremit: I’m not sure how to tell.
  • [23:15:25] <OnlineCop> This device is running its own X session, so I don’t have access to any nice GUI interface to check.

  • [23:16:26] <OnlineCop> Will I need to redo any of these steps if I rebood the BBB?
  • [23:16:29] <__butch__> wicd-cli -y -l
  • [23:16:40] <__butch__> That should list all the SSIDs that it sees.
  • [23:16:47] <OnlineCop> It returns “# BSSID Channel ESSID"
  • [23:16:51] <OnlineCop> Nothing under that header.
  • [23:17:13] <veremit> try restarting wicd now that the wlan is up ;)
  • [23:17:26] <OnlineCop> wicd-cli -y -d returns “Invalid wireless network identifier.”
  • [23:17:36] <veremit> y'never know ... lol

  • [23:18:11] <OnlineCop> Oh, thanks __butch__
  • [23:18:15] <veremit> yea
  • [23:18:41] <OnlineCop> *sigh* Still doesn’t see the wireless.
  • [23:19:18] <veremit> well .. so far .. if iwlist does .. the card works :)
  • [23:19:36] <__butch__> Does ifup wlan0 do anything?
  • [23:19:41] <__butch__> Or does it say that it's already up?
  • [23:19:44] <OnlineCop> My intent here is to let wicd be generic enough that someone can plug in their wifi dongle and it “just works”. Not sure why wicd has to be the badguy in all this. >:-(
  • [23:19:54] <__butch__> Hopefully it will advertise for a DHCP address.
  • [23:20:06] <__butch__> Or, if you get the interface up enough, you can manually do it using dhclient.
  • [23:20:17] <veremit> OnlineCop .. thats never gonna work for the Beagle :P lol
  • [23:20:21] <OnlineCop> __butch__: ‘ifup wlan0’ gives: “Ignoring unknown interface wlan0=wlan0."
  • [23:20:46] <OnlineCop> veremit: Or even, “Here’s a list of supported wifi dongles. Use one of those. You have been warned.”
  • [23:20:47] <__butch__> Hmmmmm, I think you should go muck about with /etc/network/interfaces.
  • [23:20:56] <__butch__> It doesn't cost anything to try, really. :-)

  • [23:24:13] <OnlineCop> I just wish I know which of these steps did it.
  • [23:24:13] <__butch__> Progress!
  • [23:24:29] <OnlineCop> Probably just the change to /etc/wicd/manager-settings.conf.
  • [23:24:39] <__butch__> You've only done two, right? Just undo one of them. :-)
  • [23:24:50] <__butch__> And then see if it survives a reboot.
  • [23:24:50] <veremit> I suspect wicd didn't "see" your wlan :p
  • [23:26:22] <OnlineCop> So I 1) edited /etc/wicd/manager-settings.conf to include "wireless_interface = wlan0"
  • [23:26:28] <OnlineCop> 2) Ran /etc/init.d/wicd restart
  • [23:26:32] <OnlineCop> 3) service wicd start
  • [23:26:42] <veremit> 2 = 3

  • [23:32:25] <OnlineCop> The same keyboard works on all my other Entry boxes that wicd uses; just not one of them.
  • [23:32:47] <OnlineCop> Is there a way to debug the python script to see where it’s going or why it’s not connecting to my callback?
