  • [01:03:38] <ctag> Does anyone here use the BeagleBoard-xM with X11 / a desktop?
  • [01:04:44] <ctag> I'd like to know how the interface is. I've used a BBB and found there to be a ~2 second delay for mouse movement on LXDE.
  • [01:05:04] <veremit> that sounds bad
  • [01:05:16] <veremit> the BBB I use with LXDE works fine
  • [01:05:57] <ctag> :-( hrm
  • [01:06:26] <veremit> direct on device .. not sure about over X11 forwarding/vnc/etc
  • [01:06:33] <ctag> Ok, well I'm looking to get one of these boards for a separate project that involves running Debian/ubuntu with LXDE or another light desktop
  • [01:06:52] <ctag> right, no x11 forwarding, I'd like to use the board with a screen
  • [01:07:23] <veremit> yup .. I got BBB with chalkboard 10" touchscreen .. working sweet with debian 7 and LXDE :)
  • [01:07:36] <ctag> the xM looks promising, but I'm having trouble interpreting the information that's available on the site into how it would perform in person
  • [01:07:47] <ctag> awesome, that's great to hear :D
  • [01:08:01] <veremit> why the xM?
  • [01:08:48] <ctag> It looked like the more robust of the two.
  • [01:08:56] <veremit> BBB got HDMI on board :) hehe
  • [01:09:12] <ctag> Doesn't the xM as well? at least in DVI mode?
  • [01:09:21] <veremit> possibly, yeah
  • [01:09:26] * ctag thought DVI would work with the chalkboard company screen
  • [01:09:28] <veremit> and BBB is like $50

  • [01:10:28] <ctag> You know...

  • [01:11:30] <veremit> but yeah .. work bought 3 BBB's

  • [01:12:12] <ctag> But I'm also looking to make a car computer this summer, so..
  • [01:12:18] <ssl_> i tried autostarting x11vnc in /etc/rc.local, but it did not work. i tried putting echo "blah" > /home/root/a.txt in there to see if its executed at all. turns out it's not :(

  • [01:15:58] <ctag> So, I've been trying to narrow down this project from a bunch of small arm boards, and so far my reason for sticking with the beagle boards is the open source hardware.

  • [01:24:31] <veremit> TPS65910
  • [01:24:31] <N2TOH> it's not perfect, but it's basically an onboard UPS

  • [01:24:52] <ctag> That's pretty neat, N2TOH
  • [01:25:01] <ctag> And I guess as of now I'm also looking at the BBB
  • [01:25:13] * N2TOH ducks back over to the MIT server...
  • [01:25:14] * ctag chucks BBB and wandboard onto pile of options
  • [01:25:25] <ctag> heh
  • [01:26:08] <N2TOH> at the very least on on board power chip with it's ability can keep the OS from crashing during an extended power blip
  • [01:26:33] <ctag> That's an important feature
  • [01:27:02] <N2TOH> with a 3.7V 2000mAh cell that is an extra long blip :)
  • [01:27:10] <veremit> or a 5V regulator with 12V in and some big capacitors you'll be fine :p
  • [01:27:52] <N2TOH> the 1000mAh cell from sparkfun will fit on the bottom of a cape board and not interfere with the major parts on the board
  • [01:28:02] <veremit> much cheaper too :D
  • [01:28:27] <ctag> I'm looking up videos of the wandboard, it looks pretty responsive with Ubuntu
  • [01:28:32] <N2TOH> the cell is under @20USD with shipping and most id not all support parts
  • [01:28:48] <veremit> regulator + caps < $5 ...
  • [01:29:00] <ctag> I'll be powering this project with a battery, so the UPS is somewhat accounted for
  • [01:29:07] <N2TOH> no the BBB supports a 3.7V cell directly
  • [01:29:10] <veremit> worst case plenty of time for a shutdown :)
  • [01:29:10] <ctag> but, by all means, still useful for other things
  • [01:29:39] <veremit> ubuntu is a bit heaviweight for arm systems .. but probably fine on the dual/quad-cores
  • [01:30:05] <veremit> I have seen occasions with just desktop up its taking 80% cpu lol
  • [01:30:13] <ctag> heh

  • [02:56:38] <jcw_> The host port is limited
  • [02:58:47] <jcw_> 500ma
  • [02:59:41] <sellout-> Did anyone back the LOGi FPGA for Beaglebone Kickstarter? I missed out :(
  • [03:00:34] <jcw_> So, based on my experience, anything with a RealTek RTL8291CU chipset just doesn't work. I cannot get the adapter to associate to any network, using either the 3.8.13 kernel drivers, or the 4.0.2_9000 drivers from RealTek. It works to the extent that you can scan the available APs and such, but it simply will NOT be coerced into associating.

  • [03:02:26] <hiredman> jcw_: I dunno what all you have tried, but in my experience the beaglebone would not associated with a wifi network while I had it plugged in via ethernet
  • [03:03:19] <hiredman> but, the setting up wifi really sucked even when I got it working, and I was using a pre-3.8(I think? pre dev tree) kernel
  • [03:03:41] <jcw_> I have had an ethernet cable connected when testing, but while it may not route, it SHOULD associate. That's not to guarantee it will, though.
  • [03:04:38] <hiredman> I don't know if this is still the case, but the conman stuff would someone just shut the wifi down as long as the ethernet was plugged in
  • [03:04:46] <hiredman> conman was terrible

  • [03:06:02] <jcw_> But let's say that's the case... I originally played with the PC USB port when I had Angstrom loaded. I've converted these BBBs to Debian, and plugging them into the Windoze box, it doesn't find a driver (which I think was on the Angstrom build). What do I need on Windoze to connect serially via the USB port (damn, but I miss good old fashioned RS232 serial ports)

  • [15:27:31] <ctag> So it thinks there's a cable
  • [15:27:34] <ctag> And asks for an IP

  • [15:28:27] <heeen> yeah I think it will come up
  • [15:28:35] <heeen> it also fails to recognize when I unplug it
  • [15:28:42] <heeen> so it does not remove the route
  • [15:29:21] <ctag> Ok, well that looks as strange to me as it probably does to you, my only advice would be to try another cable?
  • [15:30:08] <heeen> but there's no cable and it still tries dhcpclient

  • [23:47:49] <Guest10832> for BBB
  • [23:48:30] <myself> works fine when powered by the DC jack but dies during boot when powered by USB?
  • [23:48:44] <Guest10832> If I have a device plugged in when I boot my BBB then it doesn't recognize the port at all
  • [23:49:04] <Guest10832> but if I wait to plug in the device until it has fully booted then it recognizes it fine
  • [23:49:26] <Guest10832> and if I do have it plugged in when BBB boots up and then unplug and replug later it still never finds it
  • [23:49:30] <myself> oh, not what Iwas thinking at all.
  • [23:49:32] <Guest10832> as if the port doesn't exist
